Prof. Kim has received Best Lecture Awards in the department of ECE, SNU, for teachings of Basic Circuit Theory and Laboratory course and for the Neural Prosthetic Engineering course.

Neural Engineering and Prosthesi s뇌공학및 신경보완기술: Auditory Prosthesis (with emphasis on low cost but effective Cochlear Implants for developing countries),Visual Prosthesis (with emphasis on compact, eye-surface conformable Retinal Implant), Brain Prosthesis (with emphasis on smaller lighter, head mountable Deep Brain Stimulator), Dental Implants, Implantable Bioreactor, Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Optical Neural Interface (with emphases on finding novel ways to interface neuron optically;  neural recording using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor, Non-invasive, label-free infrared recording of neural signals, Nano-structure assisted Infra-red Neural Stimulation, Integrated Circuit Design for Biological Applications and Neural Signal Processing.

Optoelectronics 광통신전자공학: High speed Semiconductor Devices for telecommunication applications, especially in the near infrared optical communication area, including detectors (receivers), modulators, and transmitters(lasers).

  1. 1983-1989 at AT&T Bell Laboratories USA: As an MTS (Member of technical staff), Dr. Kim was involved in cutting edge research in OEIC (Optoelectronics Integrated Circuit) research for high speed Optical Telecommunication 미국 AT&T 벨연구소에서 광통신 전자공학연구
  2. 2001-2009 at Nurobiosys Corp. Korea: Kim Co-founded and led this company as CTO to develop low cost but efficient highly efficient Cochlear Implant device for severely hearing impaired people in the world who can not afford the high price of currently available devices.

Publication, and Service Activities:

 

Professor Kim has published over 150 journal papers in international journals for past 40 years..He has supervised 81 M.S. and Ph.D. dissertations as the major advisor. Among the graduates, there are 14 professors in domestic and overseas universities (Brown and Harvard University). He has taught many undergraduate and graduate courses in SNU and also globally. He has served as Director for Semiconductor Research Center and Nano Bio Systems Research Center of Seoul National University. He has also served as director of student center for counseling undergraduate and graduate students. He has received the SNU education award in 2017 for his dedication to the university in education and student counseling.
